GOODYEAR - A man was shot dead after firing at police responding to a 911 emergency call at a Goodyear motel.
The gunman was killed early Sunday after he fired at least three times, narrowly missing a female officer who had taken cover behind an ice machine in the motel lobby, police said Monday.
He then fled to a second-floor catwalk where he was shot as he leaned over a railing.
The unidentified gunman was shot after he took aim at Officer William Ryan, 44, a more than three-year member of the Goodyear force.
Ryan fired "multiple times fatally wounding the suspect," said Lt. Ralph McLaughlin, a police spokesman.
The incident took place about 2 a.m. Sunday at the Super 8 Motel, 1710 N. Dysart Road, where police were called to investigate a shot fired inside a room.
When officers arrived, they heard another shot inside the room then took cover positions while Ryan and other backup officers were called.
The gunman left the room and proceeded to the lobby, where he fired at one officer before being killed.
